For those that are new to hiking or just warming up their calf muscles, a half day experience may be perfect for you! Discover the stories behind the scenery; walk in a lush valley or into grand alpine meadows. These trips last up to four hours on a trail that best suits your needs and interests.

 

Enjoy learning the mysteries behind the ecology and geology of the area.  Choose the theme that peaks your interest and we will help you find the best trail to suit it. 

 

Survival in the Alpine

 

Learn about the unique adaptation strategies in the alpine.  The tough plants and animals that exist in the alpine could teach us a trick or two.  Learn about who is who in the plant kingdom and how they are designed perfectly for a high elevation home.  Meet porcupineanimals, or signs, like the mountain goat, marmot, ptarmigan, pica or bears and be astounded by the cleaver living strategies.   

 

Relationships that Work

 

Understand how ecology works in the natural world.  Isn’t this a course everyone would like to take and master? Behind the scenes, learn the about the amazing relationships and evolutionary stories that link bird to tree, fungi to plant, trees and disturbance, or insect to flower.  A magical tour and introduction to life Kingdoms both in the forest and alpine zones.

 

Bears of the Columbia Mountains

 

Imagine what it might be like to follow the trail of a bear: diggings, scat, markings on foliage or tracks.  Look into what sorts of foods these mammals seek out and the unique yearly habits of black and grizzly bears.  Learn about local bear population research and their connection to other wildlife and flora.  Come away impressed by this magnificent species.  

 

Destination and Booking

 

Choose a theme and we suggest a favorite trail , depending on the season.  Be the first one to book a hike and you determine the level of challenge and location!  You can join a trip that is already booked or arrange a trip of your own on another day that is available. You can also book a trip exclusively for you and your group, see custom trip.

In order to ensure hikes are available, please book as far advance as possible.  Prices are based on different guide to guest ratios.

If you enjoy a physical challenge and full day of trekking, consider joining an invigorating five to eight hour hike, see alpine hikes .

 

For those of you that live by chocolate, add fondue to your day!  Or savor an afternoon organic lunch from a peak and garner energy for the rest of your day.

 

What you need to know…

 

Ø      A locally made organic lunch & beverage can be provided for you ($15 per person).  Please request in advance.  Ensure to also bring a full water bottle.

 

Ø      We take a maximum of 8 people per guide for low ecological impact and your enjoyment. Youth are welcome, providing they can easily walk the distance. 

 

Ø      A waiver must be signer prior to the interpretive walk.

 

Ø      Proper equipment is necessary for safety and comfort.  Bring sturdy footwear with good grip, hat & gloves, sunscreen & sunhat, rain gear.  Talk to us for hiking tips or additional suggestions.

 

Ø      We can provide some extra equipment such as poles, back packs, water bottles, if necessary.  

 

Ø      We provide a French speaking guide if requested.

 

Ø      We require you to meet us at a designated time and place in Nelson.  Generally interpretive walks leave town by 10 am and return by 3-4 pm.

 

Ø      We can provide transportation to the trailhead for an additional cost; please request in advance.  If you choose to drive to the trailhead, you need a high clearance four wheel drive vehicle.
